What is Urban Greening?
So what is Urban Greening and why do we need it? Urban Greening or Green Infrastructure is the promotion of a mutually beneficial relationship between city dwellers and their environments via public landscaping and Urban planting projects. This might include parks and sports fields as well as woods, lakes and natural meadows, wetlands or other ecosystems.
The World Health Organisation has stated that:
“Green urban areas facilitate physical activity and relaxation, and form a refuge from noise. Trees produce oxygen, and help filter out harmful air pollution, including airborne particulate matter. “
They go on to say that parks and gardens have been shown to play a “critical role” in helping cool cities, and providing safe walking and cycling routes whether for commuting, physical activity, social interaction or recreation. Shockingly their research has shown that “physical inactivity, linked to poor walkability and lack of access to recreational areas,” now accounts for “3.3% of global deaths“.
The WHO also points out that green urban spaces also are important to mental health.
“Having access to green spaces can reduce health inequalities, improve well-being, and aid in treatment of mental illness. Some analysis suggests that physical activity in a natural environment can help remedy mild depression and reduce physiological stress indicators.“
