Remedial Work on Crematorium Green Roof

Bierton crematorium green roof

Bierton Crematorium is situated in the heart of Buckinghamshire countryside in a quiet meadow in the Vale of Aylesbury with panoramic views of the surrounding area. The stunning design, which won a prestigious RIBA award in 2021, “sits low in the landscape and utilises natural and tonal materials that complement that landscape successfully” – including a green sedum roof!

However, in the last few years, the prevailing wind through the valley has unfortunately damaged the planting on the exposed side of the roof and this has been exacerbated by the recent extreme weather.  TUGC we were asked to assess the situation and apply a solution…which we did.

We built a wildflower-seeded soil wall to prevent further wind damage to the roof.  The idea is that the wildflower grows and serves as a barrier and wind break along with the soil wall, disrupting and diverting the wind over the rest of the roof. This will allow the sedum time to re-establish within the newly sheltered area.
