Reinstating a Green Roof for Royal Mail Islington
During the autumn the The Urban Greening Company installation team were at Royal Mail Islington’s sorting office reinstating a green roof. The work was necessary after alterations to the standing seam roof a common commercial metal roof system that covers part of the building. Situated next to the Grand Union Canal the green roof helps blend the large industrial building into its picturesque surroundings, but it had been badly neglected and damaged during the alterations.
The green roof area on the main building covers some 440m2. There is additional green roof spaces on the site but these were unaffected. Our team added 16 tonnes of substrate and 12 tonnes of wildflower turf. An Aquaten SuDS blur roof fleece was added to improve the water attenuation on the roof as well as providing a passive irrigation system to the vegetation. The material was lifted to the roof via a scissor lift platform and installed in stages
As with all green living roofs and living wall structures it is important to calculate the necessary load bearing and tolerance levels of the structure being installed on – especially with older retrofit projects. We have many years’ experience working on large scale construction projects around the UK and offer a full planning and installation service. We are also skilled at working with other contractors to ensure a seamless installation.
