Mind the Gap – Green Roots for London Fund
Mayor Sadiq Khan has used London Climate Action week to announce the Green Roots Fund, a strategic £12 million investment designed to reshape London’s urban landscape through targeted greening initiatives.
This isn’t simply about aesthetics; the fund prioritises the creation and enhancement of London’s parks, green corridors, and waterways, attempting to directly address social equity.
A 2020 research project by Friends of the Earth titled “England’s Green Space Gap“, has found that those from Black, Asian or minority ethnic communities are more than twice as likely to live in an area deprived of green space.
By supporting community-led projects – from wildflower meadows to restored wetland habitats – the Green Roots Fund aims to improve air quality, mitigate the urban heat island effect, and enhance the wellbeing of London’s diverse population.
Crucially, this initiative aligns with the mayor’s 2024 Election Manifesto and signals a commitment to a more resilient and thriving city, particularly through the integration of innovative green infrastructure solutions like green roofs, blue roofs, and rain gardens.
The focus on equitable access to green spaces will foster biodiversity, improve stormwater management, and enhance the value of properties across London.
